Exercise & Rest

Developed Physical Health artwork

An important consideration is that the requirements for maintaining physical health are not identical for every individual. Our age, genetic inheritance, existing medical conditions, physical capabilities, environment and personal circumstances all influence what is appropriate and achievable.

For example, an activity that is beneficial for one person may be unsuitable for another because of illness, injury or physical limitations. Similarly, our nutritional requirements can differ considerably depending on our stage of life, activity levels and underlying health conditions. Therefore, developing an understanding of our individual needs is more useful than simply following a lifestyle because it has benefited somebody else.

Recreational Activity

Regular physical movement, for example, can help maintain muscular strength, cardiovascular health, mobility and general physical functioning. This does not necessarily require intensive exercise or organised sport. Walking, gardening, swimming, cycling and other enjoyable activities can all contribute to physical wellbeing when appropriate to our individual abilities.

Rest & Sleep

Sleep and rest are often underestimated in discussions of health. Yet adequate rest is essential for recovery, normal physiological functioning and our ability to manage the demands of daily life. Establishing consistent sleeping habits and recognising when our bodies require additional rest can be valuable practices.
